the non-heroes of the story

So I have been reading through the Bible. I started at the beginning like most sensible people and have come to realize that I missed a lot in my previous skim throughs. Don't get me wrong I do try to study the Word properly. But, wether its from forgetfulness or honestly being too tired to care; I have missed some really amazing revelations. I was reading about the Exodus of the Israelites and the big thing that caught my attention is the perspective of the Egyptians. Most people can frequently overlook the Egyptians in the story. They aren't the heroes of the story so most of the time we tend to skim over any mention of them. But regardless of what our culture has taught us they are an equally integral part of the story.

God isn't just concerned about us Christians. In some Christian circles we are taught to see ourselves are more righteous, more deserving of God's blessing. This could not be further from the truth. Even in the Old Testament God was very clear that His blessing was not only for the Israelites but for all who chose to worship Him. They are countless instances of gentiles (non-Israelites) serving the One True God. Are they not just as important as the Israelites? God isn't just concerned about current believers. He actively pursues all of humanity. Contrary to some beliefs God doesn't have favorites.

The Israelites were waiting on the shore of the Red See. In the distance they could see the Egyptian army fast approaching. It didn't matter that there was a pillar of fire, God's manifest presence, right in front of them. All they could perceive was their inevitable doom.

But this wasn't God's intention. He didn't send the army to bring a greater doom to HIs people. He had no intention of bringing further harm. Over and over again He made this clear through Moses and Aaron. All the miracles all the signs and wonders promised that they indeed had a future. But in that moment they forgot it all. All they could see was the army approaching with their unavoidable slaughter.

But this part of the story wasn't about them. It was for the Egyptians.

The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen...Exodus 14:18

Sometimes our perceived struggle isn't about us but about the people around us. This relationship that we have isn't supposed to be our own private thing. It isn't just for our little churches or our study groups or for a particular nationality. It's for everyone regardless of how we personally feel about them. Even our enemies God is actively pursuing.

God will place you in dangerous situations to reveal His glory to those around you.
